Schedule for fast of Tenth of Tevet

Dec 20th, 2015 by nzakon | 0

Asara Bitevet- Fast of the Tenth of Tevet

Tuesday December 22 is a fast called Asara Bitevet, the tenth day of the month of Tevet.

We fast for three reasons:

1. In the year 3336 from creation the armies of the Babylonian kingĀ Nebuchadnezzar laid a siege on Jerusalem,

2. Ezra the Prophet passed away on the ninth day of Tevet in the year 3448.

3. The Egyptian King Ptolemy locked 72 Torah scholars each in their own room and forced them to translate the Torah into Greek.

As fasting for three days would be too difficult we fast one day but for three reasons.

Fast begins 6:05 A.M.

If you would like to eat in the morning before the fast starts you should verbally stipulate before going to sleep the night before that you plan on doing so.

Shachris Services 6:25 A.M.

Mincha-Maariv Services 5:00 P.M.

Fast ends 6:08 P.M.

Pregnant and nursing women should not fast. If one is unsure if they should fast due to health concerns please ask Rabbi Zakon.
