Special mitzvos and customs for Purim

  • Machatzis Hashekel-Half Shekel

To commemorate that when we had the Bais Hamikdosh-Temple in Jerusalem all males over the age of bat mtizva would donate a half shekel to the Temple we customarily donate three half dollars. This is done before Mincha on The Fast of Esther. (We have the half dollars at Mincha for you to purchase)

    2. Megilla Reading

Men and women (over the age of bas or bar mitzva)are obligated to hear the Megilla BOTH during the evening of Purim (Wednesday evening) and during the day of Purim! (Thursday)

3. Matanos Lievyonim-Gifts to the poor

Men and women (over the age of bar or bas mitzva) must give a meal or the amount of money it would cost to purchase a meal to two poor people. This must given during the day of Purim.

RMBM (Maimonides) writes that one should spend more money on gifts to the poor than on the festive meal. One should figure that a meal for a poor person costs $10 per poor person.

Rabbi Zakon  is collecting money for this and the money will be distributed on Purim day both locally and in Israel. Please give the money to him BEFORE Purim!

 4. Mishloach Manos

Men and women (0ver the age of bar or bas mitzva) are obligated to give a gift of at least two prepared foods to another person during the day of Purim. The custom is that men give to men and women give to women.

Gala Purim Family Dinner 5:00 P.M.

Pesach is coming up! Matza can be bought in local stores. Tom Thumb Coit and Campbell as well as Cosco are selling machine and hand matza. The prices are $12.99 per pound for hand matza. This is substantially less than what it cost when we ordered from New York in past years.

We suggest buying matza soon and not waiting until closer to Pesach as they may run out of matza!
