Tisha Ba’av Schedule

The fast of Tisha Ba’av begins Monday evening and ends Tuesday night. It is a very important fast day commemerating tragedies that have befallen the Jewish nations through all the generations. Even those who might not fast on other morning to night fasts are careful to fast on this day.

People with a medical condtion or other reason why they feel they are unable to fast should consult with Rabbi Zakon.

Monday July 15

Dinner should be eaten before Mincha

Mincha 7:15 P.M.

Following Mincha return home for the final meal before the fast. The final meal consists of bread, water and hard boiled egg dipped in ash. This meal should be eaten with a sense of sadness while sitting on the floor.

The fast begins 8:36 P.M.

Kumzitz with SEED guys to create mood for Tisha Ba’av 9:00 P.M.

Maariv followied by reading of Eicha (Lamentations) 9:20 P.M.

Following Maariv there will be a discussion of the deeper meaning of the day and what it commemerates.

Five tragedies befell the Jewish nation on this day in history:

1. The spies returned with a negative report about the land of Israel this night. As a result of the Jews believing this report and not wanting to go to Israel it was decreed that the Jews would be in the desert for 40 years.

2. The first Beis Hamikdosh (Temple) was destroyed.

3. The second Beis Hamikdosh was destroyed.

4. The city of Beitar was conquered by the Romans and all its inhabitants were killed.

5. Roman leader Turnus Rufus plowed over the area the Beis Hamikdosh had previously existed upon.

There are a number of things we do or do not do on Tisha Ba’av. They are. We do not:

1. Eat or drink. (this is only for men and boys above bar mitzva and girls and women above bat mitzva.)

2. Wear leather shoes.

3.  Have marital relations

4.  Use oil or creams (unless necesary for medicinal purposes)

5. Bathe or wash except to remove dirt. Upon waking up in the morning we only wash our hands until the knuckles.

One should sleep in a way that is less comfortable than usual. For example if one normally sleeps with two pillows, sleep on TIsha Ba’av use only one pillow…
