Tisha Ba’av The Fast of the 9th of Av July 28-29

The fast begins at sundown on Shabbos 8:28 P.M.

Even though Shabbos does not end until 9:13 P.M. the fasting begins with sundown. At 9:13 P.M. one should remove leather shoes and say the words “Boruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh Lichol” Blessed is He who separates between holy and unholy. With that statement Shabbos ends. We will daven Maariv at 9:30 P.M. Once you have said the above statement you can drive to DATA of Plano.

On the 9th of Av we do not:

1. Eat or drink. (this is only for men over the age of bar mitzva or girls over the age of bat mitzva. Women who are pregnant or nursing as well people who are ill should consult with the rabbi as to whether they should fast.)

2. Wear leather shoes

3. Bathe or wash for pleasure. We only wash hands when arising in the morning, after using the bathroom or if one’s hands are dirty. When we do wash them we wash until the knuckles. (Unless the hand above the knuckle is dirty)

4. Have marital relations.

5. Smear oils or lotions on one’s self.

We sit on the floor or on a very low chair that is very close to the floor at night and during the day until 1:33 P.M.

We also minimize our pleasure by sleeping in a less comfortable manner than usual. For instance if one usually sleeps with two pillows it is proper to use only one.

Maariv Services 9:30 P.M.

Special Shachris Services 9:00 A.M. Kinnos (Special prayers for Tisha Ba’av will be recited) Tallis and Tefillin are not worn for Shachris. Tzitzis are worn without a bracha.

Fast ends 9:12. Havdala is recited before eating after the fast. As this is not Saturday night there is an abbreviated Havdala of the blessing over the wine and the blessing of havdala. The blessings over spices and candle are omitted.

Kiddush Levana, the blessing over the moon is recited after eating after the fast.
